Idle Time Management

"No gold will buy you time that has passed”, a famous Chinese saying.

Exactly how true it is, that the time that has passed will never come back, and how many of us realize it. We as employees’ build an expectation from the Organization / HR to have practices in place for managing the idle time effectively wherein we ourselves lack in identifying and utilizing our Mandays more effectively.

Measures by the organization:Management should not be focused qualitatively only rather must have processes in place to keep a track on employees’ work quantitative wise as well. Idle time can be consider as one of the key factors of the loss not only in company’s balance sheet but logically too. By tracking the status, workforce, Mandays required for the assignment, and tracking it on a weekly basis will give a clear picture pertaining to hours put in by employees’ per day. On the basis of such statistics Organization can assign different projects of different fields to them. Many companies execute the Job Rotation process wherein the employee spends a stipulated time in each department to understand the business workflow. These ideology will help the company in training the employee for taking the risk / challenges, skill enhancement and keeping employee engaged – all the said factors will lead to high productivity and a control check for attritions.

For many to adapt beyond their expertise or learn something new/ different at certain age/level becomes difficult. Psychology of an employee should be treated such way that he/she discuss his/her concerns / plans regarding the quantity of work required keeping in mind the qualitative figures as well.

I believe it is always a two way inverse relation between the employer & employee. On joining the employer shall welcome the employee in such a way that it would do it for its new family member. With such a warm welcome employee will leave no stone unturned for making the company excel. Both needs to take interest in each other’s life cycle with a belief of being one entity.
